Power-station filters: from purchase orders to a measured spares pool
The staged recovery program returning candle filters and demister pads to service — degrease, descale, flush, and a ΔP number per element.
5 min readBy Misonics application engineers
Power generation runs on filtration — candle filters, process filters, demister pads — and every blinded element is either an expensive replacement or an expensive outage. This study documents the filter recovery program run for a major energy generator, returning process filters to service on rotation.

Elements recovered to service on rotation
The contamination
Depth-loaded fouling
Filter elements load through their depth, not just their face — recovery requires a process that works inside the media, which is cavitation’s home ground.
Scale and mineral deposit
Water-side elements carry carbonate and silica scale that chemistry must dissolve — descaler territory — before flow returns.
Oil-carried solids
Lube and fuel-side filters bind their solids in oil films; a degreasing stage releases the load so the flush can carry it out.

Program
Elements recovered on rotation — spares pool instead of purchase orders
BEFORE — candle filter as removed: depth-loaded fouling (site photos on file, permission pending)
AFTER — element recovered, ΔP back to baseline
The results
Replacement spend becomes recovery spend. Elements that were purchase orders become a rotating pool with a known recovery rate.
Outage windows shrink. Recovered spares on the shelf mean element change-outs stop waiting on procurement lead times.
Every element leaves with a number. Flow or ΔP against baseline, logged — engineering can trust the pool because the pool is measured.
Waste stream managed. Fouling captured in the bath and filtration loop, disposed once, properly — not pressure-washed into a drain.
