Instrument cleaning the autoclave can trust

Sterilisation only works on clean instruments — and hand scrubbing hinged, serrated, contaminated sharps is the slowest, riskiest step in the reprocessing room. A benchtop ultrasonic replaces the brush with ten unattended minutes.

Instrument cleaning the autoclave can trust

Where it sits in your reprocessing workflow

Chairside & transport

Instruments into the transport container as used — no pre-scrubbing at the chair, no drying of soils onto the steel.

Ultrasonic clean — this machine's job

Basket in, lid on, 5–10 minutes at Low–Med power in instrument-grade detergent. Cavitation clears box joints, serrations and lumens the brush never enters — with no hands on contaminated sharps.

Rinse

Thorough rinse to remove detergent and freed soil; final rinse quality per your practice protocol.

Dry & inspect

Dry, inspect under light — visibly clean instruments, every time, documented as a repeatable step rather than an operator effort.

Sterilise

Into the autoclave. Cleaning is the step that makes sterilisation effective; ultrasonics is how the cleaning step becomes consistent.

The compliance frame: Australian reprocessing guidance treats cleaning as the critical first stage before sterilisation, and ultrasonic cleaning is a recognised mechanical cleaning method for exactly this duty. Align the cycle and detergent with your practice's reprocessing protocol and instrument manufacturers' instructions.

Why practices switch from the scrub sink

Sharps safety

The single biggest WHS win in the steri room: staff stop scrubbing contaminated sharps by hand. The basket goes from transport container to tank untouched.

Repeatable, auditable cleaning

A set cycle at set chemistry is a documented process — not a judgement call that varies with how busy the afternoon got.

Instrument life

No brush wear on cutting edges, no abrasion on plated surfaces — cavitation cleans without contact, and instruments stay serviceable longer.

Questions from this trade

Asked every week

Does the ultrasonic steriliser replace my autoclave?
No — and be wary of anything marketed that way. Ultrasonic cleaning and steam sterilisation are two different stages: the ultrasonic delivers a clean instrument, the autoclave delivers a sterile one. You need both, in that order.
Can hinged instruments go in closed?
Open them. Cavitation reaches into the box joint, but only if solution can — instruments go in racked open, not clumped. That is also what your reprocessing audit expects to see.
What detergent should we use?
An instrument-grade detergent matched to your protocol — typically neutral or enzymatic, never household products and never plain water. We supply and document the pairing with the machine.
How do we validate the step?
The cycle is fixed and loggable: time, temperature, chemistry, dilution. Pair it with your visual inspection and your existing reprocessing records — the machine turns the cleaning entry from 'scrubbed by staff' into a parameterised step.
Will it damage instruments?
Quality stainless instruments are exactly what these machines are built for. Keep dissimilar metals separated, follow instrument manufacturers' reprocessing instructions, and run delicate items on Low.
